Sundays

We do the best we can and let the chips fall where they will.

Sundays come only once a week, just like Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. Yet they’re special because they are different from the other days of the week that were made for work.

We long for a break from scratching and clawing to build a barrier fit to keep the wolves that howl outside the door at bay. There is a never ending list of chores that need doing and work that demands our best. And that is all good. It makes sense that our days are full. We were created to work. It is good to get out there and do the best we can.

It is also good to let the chips fall where they will. Because really, we aren’t in full control of the outcomes we long for. We do the best we can, and then we trust God with the results. We start hitting our licks early on Mondays and keep at it through Saturday. We study, plan, and work hard on those days. Sundays are for trusting God. They’re for taking a deep breath, and focusing our attention on the creator.

Just as we were created for work, we were created for relationships. And relationships take time too. Let’s not forget that. After 25 years of beholding my wife, I still find he fascinating. And she’s still changing at a pretty good clip. Beholding her has not gotten old. God began perfect and isn’t growing, developing, or changing. Yet I still can’t get enough of him.

It’s great to sit and watch the hummingbirds and wild turkeys this time of year. I love spending a couple of hours browsing the scriptures. And like cigarettes being the best in a cold duck blind, naps are the best on Sunday afternoons.

And holding it all together is family. I am grateful for family.
