When it comes to weather and climate here in South Texas, my thinking used to be that we have perfect weather about seven months each year and about five that are just too frazzlin’ hot! But not anymore…
A conversation with my son, William, started my thinking to change. He was spending most of the summer here at Base Camp and doing a good bit of running. One afternoon when he got back from a run we got to talking about how maybe it would be better to run early or late. I think it was about 105° at that time. He said something like, “I know that I shouldn’t push it too much this time of day, but it is what it is. No need to fight it. Besides, I actually like the heat.”
“The Navajo word, “Hozho”, may explain it best. Hozho is said to be the most important word in the Navajo language and is loosely translated as peace, balance, beauty and harmony. To be “in Hozho” is to be at one with and a part of the world around you.” *
There is a bunch of things we could complain about if we wanted to. Government officials comes to mind. How about church leadership? Rain when the baseball game is peaking, being out of coffee, the price of eggs. One of my favorites these days is that my shirts fit too closely. And we could certainly complain about the weather.
Some of the things we complain about we can change. And some we can’t. I can change how my shirts fit. I can’t change the weather.
So I’m not going to complain the temperature outside anymore.
The time of year has come for rising temperatures. We’ve already had a hand full of days over 100°. I expect that to be the norm for the next four months. Summer officially starts on June the 20th. That means that we have about eleven days of Spring left. I’d like to celebrate Spring rather than dread summer. I’m not going to do that anymore.
Life’s too short not to enjoy life. The grass is mighty green on our side of the fence.
I still love Fall. I love seeing doves fly and hearing shotgun pops. I expect to be on the lamb show circuit with Rece for the first time this fall and am really looking forward to that.
I still love Winter too. Christmas is magical.
Spring, you are my friend. I am having a great time with you this year and am excited to squeeze all the life out of these days with you as I can.
And Summer? What about you? I’m sorry for giving you a hard time in the past, both in words and attitude. I feel like we had some good reconciliation last year and I look forward to seeing you again soon! We’re going to have a great time together.
So come on Summer… I’m ready for you with my arms open wide and smile on my face!
