It makes me feel alive!
We’ve all been there. Perhaps its sitting in a duck blind or a deer stand. Been there an hour or two. At first it’s dark and you’re there set up. And then you begin to be able to see things around you. Eventually, you can make out the muy grande that’s miraculously turned into a stump. And then it’s shooting time. Every breath hangs in excitement. Cold creeps in. Any minute now…
The top of the sun breaks over the horizon officially signaling a new day.
I like to travel. Mostly, I like to travel west in the morning. I guess it’s in my blood. The whole, “Go West, young man!” thing. I don’t know. I guess it reminds me of possibility. Anything might happen. Even adventure. Though those who seek adventure aren’t really the adventurous type. If they were, they wouldn’t need to seek it. They would recognize that adventure is just trouble with an escape button. My travel has a purpose. It’s pursuing something worthwhile.
Heather and I are explorers. And so it seems natural that our life is full of adventure. And we’re happy with that. We see it as what comes when you try to do something that is greater than what we can control. But I can’t say we like it. Adventure is missing a flight because of a wreck. In our experience, adventure is unplanned, and often unwanted.
Of course, walking with Jesus requires giving up control. We most want to follow him. And we don’t often know where he is going. There is adventure in that. At least from our perspective. But the stronger our trust in him is, the more we welcome the adventure. And the more we are able to roll with the waves that slam against us.
The sun in my face in the morning reminds me of that. It’s as if Jesus is saying, “though you may not know what the day will hold, I am with you. And I will never leave you or forsake you. Trust me. Let’s go. It’s a new day. A fresh start. A new beginning. I am in control.”
